Tinder Plans AI-Powered Matching as the Dating App Struggles with Declining Users

Tinder, the iconic dating app that popularized the “swipe,” is facing a decline in active users. To reverse this trend, the company is turning to AI for help. With new AI-powered features on the horizon, Tinder aims to offer a fresh approach to matching and discovery, hoping to re-engage users who have grown tired of the same old swiping routine.

AI-Powered Features: A Fresh Approach to Dating

In its latest earnings call, Tinder’s parent company, Match Group, revealed plans to roll out AI-driven updates designed to improve the user experience. One of the key additions is AI-curated recommendations that promise more personalized and engaging matches. Match Group’s CFO, Gary Swidler, emphasized that these AI tools would offer users an alternative to swiping, adding some variety to the dating experience.

However, Swidler made it clear that AI features will not replace swiping but complement it. “We want to see a significant number of people engage with that feature and give it a try,” he said, signaling that these new AI tools would enhance the app without disrupting its core function. The goal is to improve the quality of matches and, in turn, boost Tinder’s user base.

The AI Photo Finder: A Step Toward Better Profiles

Another AI feature, the AI Photo Finder, aims to make users’ profiles more attractive by helping them select the best photos. This tool, which launched last year, analyzes users’ pictures and picks the one most likely to grab attention, giving singles a boost in the competitive world of online dating.

While these AI-driven tools are a step in the right direction, Tinder is addressing some serious challenges that have plagued the dating app industry.

Why Tinder Is Struggling

Tinder isn’t the only app facing a decline in user engagement. Many young singles have grown frustrated with the online dating scene, feeling that it’s become more of a chore than a fun way to meet people. Complaints about safety concerns, privacy issues, bad user behavior, and the overall lack of spontaneity have contributed to a significant drop in active users.

In October, Tinder’s monthly active users (MAUs) were down by 10% compared to the previous year, and although the decline slowed somewhat, the app still faced an 8% drop in January. This has caused concern within the company, as the app’s direct revenue also missed expectations, coming in at $476 million, below the projected range.

Match Group’s Strategy for Recovery

Despite these setbacks, Tinder is determined to make a comeback. Match Group appointed Zillow co-founder Spencer Rascoff as its new CEO, hoping his expertise can help turn things around. Rascoff is bullish about the potential of AI in transforming online dating, likening the current boom in AI to the shift from desktop to mobile a decade ago. He believes AI could bring the same level of transformation to dating apps that mobile did for social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

To further improve user engagement, Match Group is also planning to expand its “Friends in Common” feature, which allows users to discover potential matches through shared connections.

Tinder’s Future: Will AI Be Enough?

While Match executives are optimistic about the role AI can play, the future of Tinder remains uncertain. Despite the excitement surrounding the AI features, the company’s Q4 earnings were disappointing. Tinder’s revenue was below expectations, and user growth continues to decline. Match Group’s Q1 2025 guidance suggests further challenges, with anticipated revenue down by 3-5% year-over-year.

For Tinder, the road to recovery may not be easy. While AI could help improve the app’s matching process and user engagement, it’s clear that the dating app market is undergoing a shift. Tinder’s success will depend on how well it can adapt to these changes and meet the evolving needs of today’s singles.

Will AI be the magic solution Tinder needs, or will it take more than just technology to bring users back? Only time will tell.
