Conan O’Brien Honors the Lives of His Parents Who Passed Away Days Apart

Late-night host Conan O’Brien has shared a heartfelt tribute to his parents, Dr. Thomas O’Brien and Ruth Reardon O’Brien, who passed away within three days of each other earlier this month.

Dr. Thomas O’Brien, 95, died on December 9 after a decline in health. Ruth, 92, followed on December 12, passing away peacefully. The couple, married for 66 years, left behind an enduring legacy of professional excellence, love, and family devotion.

A Life of Professional and Personal Impact

Thomas was a visionary in the field of antimicrobial resistance and served as the first director of the infectious diseases division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Known for his global work, Thomas often traveled for his research, sparking a love for exploration in his children.

Ruth, equally accomplished, was a trailblazer in her own right, becoming the second female partner at the prestigious law firm Ropes & Gray. Despite her demanding career, she managed the family’s household, ensuring a stable and nurturing environment for their five children.

Remembering Their Bond and Legacy

In obituaries shared through The Boston Globe, Conan described his parents as complementary forces in their partnership: “My dad was the dreamer, and my mom was the realist.” Their shared values of discipline and ambition deeply influenced their children.

Reflecting on his father, Conan recalled a formative trip to South America during his seventh grade:

“I think he put the travel bug in me.”

Of his mother, Conan emphasized her dedication to their family:

“She saw to it that we were fed, clothed, and cared for while my dad was rushing around doing incredible work.”

Honoring a Lifetime of Love and Dedication

The couple, who raised five children and cherished nine grandchildren, left an indelible mark on those around them. A joint funeral service held on December 18 in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, brought family and friends together to celebrate their remarkable lives.

Conan’s tribute paints a touching picture of two extraordinary individuals whose love and commitment shaped the lives of many.
