The Shooter and a Chilling Connection
The suspected shooter has been identified as 15-year-old Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, a student at the school. In addition, a 20-year-old man from Carlsbad, California, named Alexander Paffendorf, has been detained in connection with the attack.
Authorities allege that Paffendorf conspired with Rupnow to coordinate simultaneous attacks—Rupnow at her school and Paffendorf at an unspecified government building.

Paffendorf reportedly admitted to planning his attack using explosives and firearms, according to a gun violence restraining order obtained by CBS 8. He had communicated with Rupnow in the days leading up to the shooting.
The restraining order, issued under California’s red flag law, requires Paffendorf to surrender his firearms and ammunition. Investigators are analyzing the pair’s messages to understand the motives behind their plans.
